I followed the tutorial "Beginner Tutorial: Create Dexter on illustrator" by Marcos Torres at http://abduzeedo.com.

I consider this tutorial an intermediate tutorial as the author does not go into a lot of detail, but rather assumes you know the basics. The final image looks a  lot like Dexter though.
